The Worm Farm Waste System at Winton Wetlands has been designed and built to accommodate all wastewater generated by the staff and visitors to the wetlands.

The 8,750Ha site, the largest scale wetland restoration project in the southern hemisphere, is leading the way in the creation of a major national facility for wetland education and research while offering unique nature based tourism activities and recreation.

The Victorian Government committed up to $20 million to restore the site following the decommissioning of Lake Mokoan. In 2009 the Winton Wetlands Committee of Management was appointed under the Crown Land (Reserves) Act 1978 to oversee the restoration of the site and implement the Future Land Use Strategy (FLUS).
